🌳 Ancestry Style Services, The DNA Lie 🧬

Post written by David β€’ Published on

Case in point, genetic testing company '23andMe' let hackers walk away with genetic data of 6.9 million users over a five month period back in 2023. Then went bankrupt.

Our data is a very valuable resource and we should never trust a company or organisation to keep it safe on our behalf.

The company initially lied and said that only 14,000 customers were affected but news soon circulated that the number was near the 7 million mark.

This actually makes up nearly half of this company's user base and leaked data included;

πŸ‘‰ Genetic ancestry results, including ethnicity estimates and haplogroup data

πŸ‘‰ Health predisposition reports, carrier status reports, wellness reports, and pharmacogenetics data

πŸ‘‰ Raw genotype data for some users

πŸ‘‰ Self-reported health conditions

πŸ‘‰ Names, birth years, profile photos, and self-reported locations

πŸ‘‰ Family surnames, grandparent birthplaces, and family tree connections

πŸ‘‰ Percentage of DNA shared with genetic matches and predicted relationships

πŸ’‰πŸ’ŠWhy Do Hackers Target DNA companies? πŸ’‰πŸ’Š

Your health data is a goldmine not only for Big Pharma but individuals who see a profit and opportunity from it.

Companies like 23andMe advertise to appeal to your "Was Your Great Great Grandfather A Norse King?" desires but that marketing facade is simply to make money selling your data to an unlimited list of 3rd parties.

It's as cynical as that!

Once you give away that information to 23andMe, assume 100+ additional companies are buying it without your knowledge.

🚰πŸͺ›Was it a 'Hack' or a 'Leak 🚰πŸͺ›

Mainstream media call it a 'hack', apportioning blame on an anonymous, 'dangerous' hacker/s but it should also be seen as a leak caused by poor privacy and security on the side of the data keeper.

Wherever the fault lies, in this case someone walked in the front door and took the sensitive data of unassuming users without hinderance.

πŸ”Safeguard Data As You Would Your HouseπŸ”

πŸ‘‰ Always question when someone asks for your data

πŸ‘‰ Always decline data sharing consent (usually ticking/unticking a box)

πŸ‘‰ Give a false name/email on anything non-official, you won't get in trouble!

πŸ‘‰ Avoid companies like 23andMe/Ancestry completely who focus on your most intimate data, your DNA!
