The UK Government has, as of today (9/6/26) demanded and given big tech a deadline of September to implement the groundwork for a mass surveillance infrastructure.

The UK government, hot on the heels of the ''Online Safety Act'' has ordered all big tech firms who sell devices and operate in the UK to comply with their dystopian vision of control.
They are demanding the pushing of updates and integration of software controls to every device in order to scan and block content which fails to comply with the UK government's standards.
These controls will prevent children from taking, viewing, sending, receiving, or saving nude images, across the entire device, including the camera, third-party apps, messaging services, and search.
Because this cannot be scoped only to children without verifying who is using the device, it effectively requires all users to prove their age to the device in order to unlock unfiltered use of their own phone.
❓Will Big Tech Comply❓
Big Tech have far too many valuable contracts with the UK already and their unrelenting development of AI means this sort of on device scanning will combine perfectly with the UK's huge push for everyone's facial biometrics for total surveillance.
Big Tech have a choice, comply completely or pull out of the UK and the latter simply won't happen due to the size of the market here.
Overnight, your device will receive a forced update. This update will immediately change the way your device behaves. It will likely lock access to your device, and thus it's entire contents, behind age verification prompts. You will have no choice but to comply or lose everything.

The private messaging app Signal has released this damning statement on today's news. Other privacy respecting apps and services are following with their own and what this means for non-big tech entities such as these remains to be seen but the only way to avoid these controls is to migrate to privacy respecting tech.
